“Open up a vein” is a website dedicated to writing and to teaching. The name refers to a quotation of the late Red Smith, prize-winning sports writer. When asked about his writing process, Smith said, “There’s nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and open a vein.” As a writer, I think I understand what Smith meant when he described his own writing process. Effective writers and teachers must, I believe, be vulnerable. We reveal ourselves by what we say on the page and what we say in the classroom. I welcome you to my website where I am bleeding some my life’s learnings.
